Cutch tree is commonly known as khadira in Sanskrit that belongs to Fabaceae family in the genus Acacia.
Acacia is a potent medicinal herb used in ayurveda and has been used for other purposes as well.
It is found throughout Asia including India and china.
Cutch is beautiful plant having erect and long stem with compound leaves and leaflets in pair of 30-50.
The tree id deciduous growing to 9-12 m tall in height and having dark, brown and fissured bark.
The flowers are sessile, yellow coloured growing on a long stem; the fruit is small pod growing corresponding to a stem of flower.
The fruit pod contains numerous seeds.
Acacia is naturally distributed in haryana, from indo gangetic plains to Afghanistan and also found near coastal areas of Deccan plateau and Himalayan region with an altitude of 1250 m or above.
This medicinal herb grows naturally on all types of soil and grows best in alluvium soil.
The plant generally leafless during late springs to early summers and provides foliage in mid-summers from June to July.
Leaves, flowers, pods
The active compounds found in cutch are 2-12 % catechins, 25-33 % phlobatannin, 20-30 % gummy substance, quercitrin and quercitin.
Cutch or khair is potent herbal medicine used in ayurveda to expel worms, parasites, healing wounds and to suppress blood coming out of cough.
It is also been used in Chinese medicine to heal ulcers, skin ailments, mouth ulcers, and other traumatic injuries.
As a common traditional ayurveda remedy the decoction of khair’s bark is taken sore throat.
The decoction of leaves, pods and stems have also been used to treat malaria, dysentery and diarrhea.
It has various other actions like anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and astringent.
