Herb : Common Rue

Classification

History

Rue is common herb and a native to southern Europe.

Though it is indigenous to Europe but now it is cultivated worldly wide.

It is commonly known for its terrible smell which is used for the plants to keep insects away.

Plant Description

Common rue is a hardy, evergreen herb with a woody stem at the lower part. Its leaves are alternate, bipinnate or sometimes tripinnate and blue-green in colour.

The flowers blossom from June to September and are yellow in colour with 4-5 petals of about 1 cm diameter.

Its fruits are 4-5 lobbed capsules which contains numerous seeds.

Cultivation

It is widely cultivated in every part of world and naturally grows in Mediterranean region.

It tolerates hot and dry conditions and prefers open spaces under bright sunlight. The airborne parts of rue are harvested during summer.

It flourishes in hot and arid regions and propagated by seeds. The seeds are sown in the outside during spring and regular raking is required to avoid weeds.

Rue contains about 0.5% of volatile oil, flavonoids, furanocoumarins, and 1.4% furoquinoline alkaloids (including fagarine, skimmianine, arborinine, and others).
