Being a species of banyan tree peepal is native to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, southwest china and Indochina. <BR> </P> <P>Peepal is sacred in three religions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and devotees usually perform offerings to it.<BR></P> <P>It is personified as god and symbolizes happiness, prosperity and good luck.<BR></P> <P>From ancient times sages have been meditating under the shade of this tree as it is believed that sages were spiritually enlightened and awakened inside peepal shade. <BR></P> <H2>Plant Description</H2> <P>Ficus religiosa or peepal is long tree growing to 30 m tall in height having a thick trunk which measures upto 3 m in diameter. <BR></P> <P>Peepal is deciduous and semi-evergreen tree having long leaves cordate in shape with a long distinct tip at the top.<BR></P> <P>Leaves are 10-27 cm long and 8-12 cm wide; fruit is small green to red fig in 1-1.5 cm diameter.<BR></P> <H2>Cultivation</H2> <P>Peepal can found throughout India including states like haryana, bihar, kerala and Madhya Pradesh.<BR> </P> <P>This tree is propagated through seeds or cuttings; grows in all type of soil, full sunlight and ample water. <BR></P> <H2>Parts Used</H2> <P>Root, bark, leaves, fruit<BR> </P> <H2>Uses</H2> <P>Peepal tree has got spiritual and religious significance in Hinduism and Buddhism for which follower s usually holy offerings to this tree. <BR> </P> <P>It is believed that apart from religious significance peepal is also valued for its medicinal value.
