Mimusops elengi is huge tree which usually found in south Asia, south East Asia and northern Australia.

Plant Description

The bakula tree is small but big in size that grows to the height of 30 to 60 ft having circumference of 1 cm.

The leaves are shiny, dark green, oval shaped and 4-13 cm long and 2.5-6 cm wide.

The flowers of this tree are off white, slightly hairy and fragrant which can be used as ornamental.

The fruit is ovoid, 2.5 cm long, green in colour and gets yellow when ripen.

Cultivation

The chief constituents of bakula are volatile oils, quercitrol, ursolic acid, glucose, a triterpene alcohol, quercetin, dihydroquercetin and sitosterol glycoside.

Bark also contains Taraxone, taraserol, butilinc acid and spinasterol.
