History

Figwort is historical herb used in east and west for various purposes.

Figwort is herbaceous flowering plant which constitutes 200 species found in the genus scrophularia and family of schrophulariaceae.

This genus can be found throughout the northern hemisphere and mostly spread to Asia while few species concentrated in Europe and North America.

Plant Description

Figwort is herbaceous plant with acutely heart shaped leaves and the roots are without the projections or wings at its angle.

The lobes of the calyx have narrow membranous margin.

The specie of figwort is usually found in moist and damp places; sometimes it grows as weed in waste lands.

Cultivation

As been said figwort is cultivated in busy, moist and damp land.

It is generally found in throughout of Asia and only few species grow in Europe and North America.

Figwort contains Iridoids, e.g. aucubin, harpagide, acetyl harpagide and 6 [[alpha]]-rhamnopyranosylcatalpol; Flavonoids- diosmin and hesperidin; Phenolic acids- ferulic, isoferulic, p-coumaric, caffeic, vanillic & chlorogenic acids.
