History

Mandrake is valued for its magical folklores that were used immemorial from ancient times. It is thought that mandrake helps in ward off evil.

Mandrake root resembles that of human body shape and ancient people believed that there exists male and female mandrake.

Today mandrake is being researched and administered as magical and potent healing herb.

Mandrake is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean regions of Greece and Rome.

Plant Description

Mandrake is perennial plant with shield shape leaves and having large cup like single waxy flower that droops from between the leaves.

The fruit is lemon-yellow, ovate and about 2 inches long usually called apples.

The plant generally grows to a height of 12-18 inches; the leaves are umbrella shaped, smooth and paired.

Cultivation

Mandrake is cultivated in partial or shady lands and sometimes it is been found on wastelands, stony areas as weed.

It is also found along roadsides, rich woods, fields, forests and thrives in rich moist soils.

Found extensively in fields and clearing in England to Florida and Texas to Minnesota.
