Cleaver is an annual plant and can be found in most parts of the world.

It is highly valued for its medicinal uses. It has a long history of use as an alternative medicine and is still widely used by herbalists.

Plant Description

Cleaver is basically found growing on hedgerows, wood fields, among cultivated crops and on the waste areas.

It is straggling annual plant with a slender taproot and weak square stems which clings to other plants with small, curved prickles at the angles of the stems on the veins and edges of the leaves.

The stems and leaves are covered with little hooked bristles which attach to passing objects. It is dense which climbs upward often forming matted masses.

Leaves are narrow and lance shaped which are rough along the margins and surface.

The flowers are white and tiny 1/16 to 1/8 in diameter and star liked growing in a stemmed bud rising from the leaf axils.

Cultivation

Cleaver is cultivated in many countries such as Australia, Britain, china, Europe, France, Iraq, Mexico, Spain, turkey and US.

The flowers of cleavers are greenish white in colour which appear from May to September.
