History

Iris is an evergreen plant which is found in open woodlands and near sea cliffs.

It is naturalized widely in Western Europe including England, Ireland and south of Durham, Africa, Italy and Greece.

Plant Description

The plant is evergreen perennial which grows to a height of 1m to 1.5m.

The flowers are hermaphrodite dusky purple colour with dark veins.

The leaves are long, flat strips bearing flowers at the top. Just beneath every flower a seedpod develops.

The seedpod is 5-7 cm long and burst when ripen containing red bright berries.

Cultivation

The plant is hardy at zone 6 and not considered as frost tender.

The leaves are evergreen, flower blooms from may to July and seeds get ripe in October.

It thrives in well drained soils like sandy, loamy, and clay. It also requires acidic alkaline soils.

Ariel parts.

Uses

The fresh roots of iris have known to possess cathartic and its juice is given in dropsy.

Iris is also used in problems like cough, lungs problem and hoarseness.
