History

Oroxylum indicum is commonly known as Indian trumphet and widely used in Chinese medicine.

It is a flowering plant that belongs to a bignoiaceae family in the genus of oroxylum.

Oroxylum is naturalized to Indian subcontinent and commonly found on the footsteps of Himalayas and parts of Bhutan.

Plant Description

Its tree grows to a height of 12 m and the bark is grayish brown in colour having corky lenticels.

The leaves are large of about 0.5-1.5 m long and 8 cm broad having 2-3 pinnate.

The flowers are red-purple externally and pink-yellow internally with large erect racemes.

The fruit of Indian trumphet is long sword shaped capsule, 0.33-1 m long and 4-9 cm broad containing numerous flat seeds.

Cultivation

Indian trumphet is majorly cultivated in moist and temperate regions of Himalayas, Bhutan, and china.

Generally it is found at an altitude of 4000 feet.

Bark, roots, seeds.

Constituents

The main three constituents of stem and root are oroxylin A, baicalein and crysin. Apart from these constituents it also contains alkaloids, tannic acid, sitasterol, glactose and essential oil.
