History

Elderberry is specie of Sambucus nigra and native of Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia.

Elderberry has been used for several remedies to treat various diseases in different parts of worlds.

Plant Description

Elderberry is a deciduous shrub that grows upto a height of 4-6 m. the leaves of this plant is 10-30 cm long, pinnate with five to seven leaflets which are 5-12 cm long and 3-5 cm broad but are arranged in opposite pairs.

The flowers are hermaphrodite blooms in mid summer and borne in large corymbs 10-25 cm in diameter having five petals.

The fruit is dark purple to black berry having diameter of 3-5 mm that are produced in drooping clusters.

Cultivation

Elderberry cultivates in fertile and moist soils but grows best in well drained loamy soils.

It should be made disease free although they are tolerant to improper conditions but care must be taken regarding this matter. The cross pollination increases the fruit production.

Planting should be done in early spring and the distances of 1 m in the rows and 4-5 m between the rows must be made.

Elderberry requires frequent soil drainage and watering to grow properly.
